About this place
Gunyama Park is a modern City of Sydney park at 17 Zetland Avenue, Zetland set among new apartment buildings in an area with active construction nearby. The main pathways are wide, firm exposed-aggregate concrete with gentle, even gradients, making the core of the park comfortable to navigate by wheelchair, walker or scooter. Running alongside these concrete paths is a raised reddish-timber boardwalk that borders the synthetic sportsfield; the boardwalk has small gaps between boards, recessed bolt fixings, and sections that sit slightly raised above the adjoining concrete and grass, creating low lips and edges. It can also become slippery when wet or after leaf fall, so the smooth concrete path beside it is the easier and safer choice. Where the boardwalk meets the concrete, transitions are mostly flush but not always perfectly level.
The synthetic playing field is edged by raised timber platform structures that double as casual seating. These have an unprotected drop of roughly knee height down to the surrounding lawn with no railing, so take care moving close to them — they are not designed as transfer points. Note that dogs are not permitted on the synthetic field itself, though dogs on-leash are welcome on the surrounding paths and lawns.
A wheelchair-accessible toilet is available in the Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre, approximately 120 m from the sportsfield, reachable along the firm concrete path — this is the nearest accessible bathroom, so factor the short distance into your visit. Other amenities include a drinking fountain with a dog bowl at its base (spout height suits standing users more than seated), an outdoor gym on a soft rubberised surface that is harder to roll across than concrete, and plenty of seating including timber bench platforms and round tree-surround benches on level paving. City of Sydney wayfinding signage with a park map marks accessible access to the sports field, toilets and other facilities.
On-street parking is available close to the park entrances, including space large enough to set down from a wheelchair-accessible van at the kerb, and kerb ramps with tactile paving connect the road crossings. A green-painted shared cycleway runs along the street edge, so be aware of bikes when crossing. The surrounding streets are a 40 km/h school zone.
Overall, Gunyama Park Sports Field is welcoming and largely navigable for visitors with mobility needs, provided you favour the concrete footpaths over the timber boardwalk and take care around the unprotected field-edge platforms.
