The Viewing Park has 4 covered Cabanas for visitor use. 1, 2 and 3 table Cabanas, and a 4 table Pavillion are available, all surrounded by grassed areas. There is a large shared BBQ for the Cabanas plus another BBQ at the Pavillion that are free to use. This new central area is surrounded by a number of animal enclosures, including Rhinos, Blackbuck, Dingos and more. A tranquil waterfall, creek, landscaped gardens and trees make this a wonderful area to hold your family picnic or larger event, while having access to a number of animal species in close proximity.

African Plains BBQ Function Area is a large grassed area situated centrall in the zoo.  It has has a covered pergola area with 3 large picnic tables and bench seats, and two separate BBQ’s. Surrounding this area are exhibits for Giraffe, Black and White Colobus Monkey and the Native Walk Thru.

Asian Aviary BBQ Area with covered pergola BBQ area adjacent to the Birds of Asia aviary. It is surrounded by the Meerkat and an Aviary exhibit with the Tree Kangaroos and Koalas close by. Two large picnic tables with bench seats are available for use.

Sun Bear BBQ Function Area  is a small, quiet spot nestled amongst beautiful gardens with a small grassed area alongside a covered pergola with 3 large picnic tables and bench seats, and two separate electric BBQ’s. Nearby is the Birds of Asia aviary and the Meerkat and Sun Bear exhibits, all of which can be easily accessed from the function area.

You are welcome to bring your own food and drink into the zoo (with the exception of alcohol).  The zoo has several areas within the grounds that can cater for anything from a simple picnic or BBQ to a large family or corporate event whilst being surrounded by some of the zoo’s most amazing animals.  There are grassed areas, picnic tables,  covered gazebos and cabanas, all shared facilities and are free to use on a first come basis. Booking a table isn’t required and there is plenty of seating to choose from.

Adventureland is located next to the rhino bistro and viewing park area and is unlike any other playground in the region designed for children to experience the wonders of the natural world. They are able to explore life-size fibreglass animal sculptures and structures in a tropical garden setting, all while learning more about the natural world that exists around them.

    National Zoo & Aquarium

    The National Zoo & Aquarium is privately owned and Australia's only combined Zoo and Aquarium. Situated on around 25 hectares of land just five minutes from the centre of Canberra.

    Most of the National Zoo is accessible by wheelchair. The site does include some steep inclines however if you follow the designated adventure trail these areas will be avoided. There are several mobility scooters available for hire. Advanced bookings are encouraged as there are limited units available on any given day. To make a booking please call 02 6287 8400 or email [email protected]. Identification is required as well as a hire form to be completed at the time of hire.

    There is a wide variety of both native & exotic animals, as well as the largest inland saltwater tank in Australia. There are a number accessible picnic areas, complimentary BBQ facilities along with Jungle Vines Cafe, Rhino Bistro, Adentureland Playground, Gift Shop, & Animal Encounters where you get the opportunity to get up close & personal with some of the worlds most amazing creatures.

    There are a number of disabled car parking spaces available for use. These are located at the main entrance and near the secondary keyhole entrance. Parking is free for all zoo and Jamala visitors.

    Accessible toilets can be found at the park along with baby change room.

    A full viewing of the zoo is a decent walk….easy for some, not so easy for others…

    If your mobility isn’t great or you have toddlers who would struggle with the distance, you can split up your visit. You can do one section one day and return any time in the next 2 weeks to see the other section. Parking is generally available near the start of both sections.
