Tours are all conducted by guides with extensive local knowledge. Groups are always small (never more than 12-15 people) and they go at your pace. All venues are accessible to all, including wheelchair users.  

Apart from the tour itself, the great thing about this is that it has been specifically put together for people who have difficulties getting around. The Rocks in particular is well known for being hilly, uneven, and generally hard to negotiate. This tour purposely avoids steps and steep hills.

It takes approximately 3 1/2 hours, including walks totalling 3 km (with two of the longer walks being around 1.2 km each).

The tour purposely avoids all steep hills and difficult terrain. It is held predominantly on flat and smooth pathways. A public lift can be taken to avoid the steepest part of the route.There are accessible toilets en route (both public ones and those owned by specific venues). Board the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway for a journey to Kuranda. Be amazed as you soar over rainforest in a cable car, gliding silently over the canopy, enjoying two stops along the way, before returning on the Kuranda Scenic Rail.

In the morning, a driver will collect you from your hotel, check you into the tour, and issue you with a Kuranda Boarding Pass. This includes a detailed itinerary with timings, as well as your Kuranda Scenic Rail and Skyrail tickets, allowing you to proceed straight to the boarding area. Your day begins with the famous Kuranda Scenic Rail journey to Kuranda. Once aboard, enjoy this historical journey to Kuranda, enjoying breathtaking views across the cane fields of Cairns, to the tropical rainforest of Kuranda.

There are two stops along the way to disembark and explore. Once you arrive in Kuranda, you'll have time to explore this unique village. The Heritage Markets operate 7 days a week and are full of colourful and interesting arts and crafts. While at this stop, you might also like to visit Birdworld, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, or Kuranda Koala Gardens [at your own expense]. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to purchase food. You can also use the discounted entry on your Kuranda Boarding Pass for some of the popular attractions!

At the scheduled time, make your way directly to the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway boarding line – there is no need to queue as your tickets are already on your Boarding Pass. Once aboard, be amazed as you journey over and through World Heritage protected Rainforest. Your Boarding Pass is your ticket for this iconic rainforest experience that includes time at both Red Peak and Barron Falls stations, both with spectacular lookouts. Or visit the Rainforest Interpretation Centre. Complimentary guided boardwalk tours are offered throughout the day at Red Peak Station. After arriving at the Smithfield Skyrail, make yourself known to the tour's hostess who will direct you to your coach for the transfer to your accommodation.

The Kuranda Scenic Rail and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway tours ex Cairns are suitable for passengers in a wheelchair.

There is access to all areas of the Skyrail experience with wheelchair ramps. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway can be slowed or stopped to allow for easy, stress-free access onto and off the Skyrail gondolas, with assistance from a friendly Skyrail operator. There are size guidelines; wheelchairs cannot exceed 630mm in width and 950mm in length and must be capable of being tilted backwards (raising the front wheels) to enable loading onto gondola.

For people with disabilities, who may have difficulties using the stairs or negotiating the gap between the train and the platform, we recommend using the accessible carriage where assistance with boarding will be provided. This accessible carriage is available on every Kuranda Scenic Rail service. Platform heights, station facilities and access vary, and we recommend you review relevant station information in the PDF below.

Wheelchair accessible restrooms throughout the entire experience.

Wheelchair access is available on bus transfers (wheelchairs cannot be carried separately on the bus transfer service, but please advise if you require this service and alternative arrangements will be made at the time of booking).

Once guests arrive in Kuranda, they will need to make their own way into Kuranda Village which is approximately 700m and up a small incline

After getting fitted in gloves, Ugg boots and a snow cape or faux fur coat, make your way through the doors of IceBar's Explorers Hut to enter the sub-zero temperatures on the other side!  Once inside you can check out the ever changing display of hand carved ice sculptures, take some memorable photos and enjoy a drink!

There are over 30 tonnes of sculpted ice in the space, making it the perfect place to (literally) cosy up with a date, party with friends or chill with the family!

Your choice of a cocktail and an ice shot are included, so enjoy a drink while sitting on an ice sculpted seat (brrr), play air (ice) hockey, or take pictures on the provided camera systems (no personal photography once inside!). Order creative cocktails or shots at the ice bar to warm you up! (Go for the Crunchie shot for a sweet treat!)

To ensure guests remain comfortable in the subzero environment, each session lasts for 45 minutes, , but if you need to pop out during your session then that's fine.

Of course, the IceBar isn’t just for grown-ups — kids are welcome every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., making it a unique outing for the whole family to enjoy. They must be accompanied by an adult. If you are using a wheelchair, it may be best to visit at less crowded, off-peak times when there will be more room to manoeuvre your chair. If the bar is at capacity, around 20 people, there will still be room for you, but you may want to avoid the crowds.

There is direct access to the accessible toilets in The Atrium at Fed Square.
 

It's recommended to wear long pants and closed shoes, however, you'll be provided with snow capes, gloves and Ugg boots (where required). You'll feel the chill no matter what you wear, however the more clothes you wear, the longer you'll last!

There is no time limit for your visit, you can stay as long as you like! On average, guests feel most comfortable for around 30 minutes or so, but if you need to pop out and have a warm coffee before heading back in, that's fine with IceBar.

Spirit of Gold Coast is the only company to have sighted Migaloo, the White Whale for 3 consecutive years – 10th July 2003, 2nd June 2004 and 16th July 2005, and again in 1st July 2009, 27th September 2012 and last year on 10th August 2015, 10th August 2015 and this year on 11th of July 2017.

As the photo above shows, it is flat and smooth.

This varies depending on the level of the tide, but as the pictures above show, it is wide enough for wheelchairs, and even at low tide, the gradient is not difficult.

Although entry is level, it is not large enough to accommodate most wheelchairs. If you are a wheelchair user, you may need to ensure that you have visited the bathroom prior to the journey (which lasts a maximum of 2 hours 30 minutes).

If I cannot stand, will my view of the whales be obscured?

For those who are less mobile, who can't manoeuvre around the vessel, the captain will always ensure that he turns the boat so that you get an optimum view.


What boat do you have & how many do you take out?

Spirit of Gold Coast is a 24metre Catamaran built to International Marine Standards (Bureau Veritas) designed for maximum stability and comfort, surveyed for 170 passengers + five crew in open waters. During the whale season we like to limit our numbers to a maximum of 145 to give all passengers space to move around and take advantage of the great viewing positions. Our vessel has excellent 360º viewing from upper and lower decks, and a fully licensed bar. This boat was designed for your comfort.

When is the best time to go out whale watching?

Our Gold Coast location allows Spirit of Gold Coast to enjoy the longest Whale Watching season in Australia from June to early November each year. No two whale watching journeys are the same, with an unforgettable experience occurring during the whole whale watching season.

At the beginning of the season you are likely to watch these amazing creatures as they migrate north to warmer waters to mate and give birth, whereas later in the season you are likely to catch them as they return south with their newborn calves.

Each year Humpback Whales (otherwise know as Megaptera novaeangliae) travel past the Gold Coast during their migration. On the rare occasion you may be fortunate to also see Orcas (killer whales).

Yes, there are a large variety of other marine life to keep an eye out for including but not limited to dolphins, flying fish, turtles, sharks and birds.

As responsible whale watchers, we don’t approach closer than 100m of the whales. Though that doesn’t mean the whales can’t come to us and they do. Whales are curious mammals – at times they will dive for a few minutes and come up where you least expect them, sometimes close to the boat! Everyone, and that includes recreational boaters, follow the same regulations – 100m from the whales is as close as the rules allow any boat to approach.

Will I see Migaloo (the white humpback whale)?

If you are very lucky! Each whale swims by on their northern and southern migration, this sometimes occurs at night. In 2009 the Majestic White Whale ‘Migaloo’ (White Fella’ in the Aboriginal language) passed our shores on Wednesday the 1st of July which passengers and crew aboard Spirit were fortunate to see. We are the only Whale Watching Boat to have sighted ‘MIGALOO’ the White Whale three years consecutively: 10/7/2003, 22/6/2004, 16/7/2005. In 2006, 2007 and 2008 Migaloo was elusive as he passed the Gold Coast, with no confirmed sightings. Migaloo was once again sighted in 2009 and 2012. Spirit Vessel last sighted MIGALOO last year on 10th August 2015. What a day!

We highly recommend enclosed flat comfortable shoes as well as a jacket or jumper as it can tend to get a little chilly in the sea breeze.

Pick up from and return to your hotel is included in the cost. However the minibus is not wheelchair accessible (with 2 steps up), so if you are unable to walk at all, you will need to meet at Ayers Rock Airport.

This is normally done by taking another minibus (with 2 steps up again) from the terminal building to the aircraft. Alternatively, you can forego the minibus in favour of covering the approximately 200 metres by ground.

The minibus parks a very short distance (approximately 15 meters) from the aircraft and the terrain is very gently sloped, part gravel and part smooth concrete.

This will depend entirely on your level of mobility, the company is unable to assist you in and out of the aircraft. They do have small steps or step ladders to help you into the aircraft (going backwards and swinging your legs inside can work, or in some instances, they have taken passengers that were carried in and out.

The operator ensures a window seat, however due to the sensitivity of the controls and safety of the aircraft this will be in one of the rear seats, not next to the pilot (occasionally the aircraft encounters turbulence and this can involve passengers bumping into the controls).

Staff are unable to assist in the event of an emergency, so you must be able to exit the aircraft without assistance from the pilots. If you require to be lifted or balanced in and out of the aircraft a carer is recommended. This can be a friend or family member that agrees to take the responsibility for assistance.

The tour takes off from the Airport, about a 10-minute drive from the town centre.

The tour will pick you up and drop you off from your accommodation in the Ayers Rock resort.

Wear something comfortable, bring a bottle of water and don't forget a fully charged camera!'
