The National Zoo & Aquarium is privately owned and Australia's only combined Zoo and Aquarium.  Situated on around 25 hectares of land just five minutes from the centre of Canberra.

Most of the National Zoo is accessible by wheelchair. The site does include some steep inclines however if you follow the designated adventure trail these areas will be avoided.  There are several mobility scooters available for hire. Advanced bookings are encouraged as there are limited units available on any given day. There is a wide variety of both native & exotic animals, as well as the largest inland saltwater tank in Australia. There are a number accessible picnic areas, complimentary BBQ facilities along with Jungle Vines Cafe, Rhino Bistro, Adentureland Playground, Gift Shop, & Animal Encounters where you get the opportunity to get up close & personal with some of the worlds most amazing creatures.

There are a number of disabled car parking spaces available for use. These are located at the main entrance and near the secondary keyhole entrance.  Parking is free for all zoo and Jamala visitors.

Accessible toilets can be found at the park along with baby change room.

A full viewing of the zoo is a decent walk….easy for some, not so easy for others…

If your mobility isn’t great or you have toddlers who would struggle with the distance, you can split up your visit. You can do one section one day and return any time in the next 2 weeks to see the other section. Parking is generally available near the start of both sections.

National Zoo & Aquarium

The National Arboretum near Canberra features the Events Terrace Loop, a 0.6km loop trail taking an average of 9 minutes to complete.

This short accessible path begins & ends from the main car park, which can be reached directly from the Tuggeranong Parkway.  The trail is a mix of sealed & gravel path, intentionally wheelchair friendly.  The path takes you around the southern side of the village Centre, through a range of gardens including the National Bonsai Collection.    Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.  

Accessible toilets can be found at the Village Centre which is modern & functional with grab rails & under sink roll in.  Further accessible toilets can be found at the children's playground.  The playground also features accessible swings, a cafe & restaurant can be found closeby.

There are 11 disabled car parks near the entrance & 3 more outside the Margaret Whitlam Pavilion Function Centre.  Three wheelchairs are available for hire

Events Terrace Loop

Heartbeat Cafe is an accessible venue located in the Whitlam Display Village.  The cafe is an initiative between Woden Community Services and the Suburban Land Agency, providing young and vulnerable Canberrans with a safe place to bridge this skills gap and offer genuine entry-level opportunities.

The cafe offers step free entry via a ramp to covered outdoor seating area to large step free entry doorway with easy access to the counter.  There is further uncovered picnic benches in the gardens.

Accessible toilets can be found onsite along with parking. 

Heartbeat Cafe

Village Cafe is an accessible venue offering step free access to double doors via paved pathway approach, located at Waramanga Shops

Village Cafe is all about using handmade pasta & locally grown garden market produce for their salads.  There are freestanding tables & chairs inside with easy access to the counter.  There is further outside seatin & tables available.  

Disabled parking spots are located just outside the venue & accesible toilets can be found 1.5km away at Ampol Foodary Weston & Chifley Place.

Lava Coffee is a semi accessible cafe located on Brierly Street, Weston.

There is a slight step to naviage on entry to wide open doorway via paved pathway approach & easy access to the counter.  There are both inside & outdoor seating & tables.  

Parking can be found across the road in the large car park, accessible toilets next door at Ampol Foodary, Weston.

Eighty/Twenty is an accessible cafe serving healthy, clean, natural & unprocessed whole foods. With five locations across Canberra this Eighty/Twenty is located in Coombs Local Shopping Centre.

The cafe offers step free entry via paved level pathway approach to glass door & easy access to the counter.  There are both freestanding tables & chairs inside & outside.

Accessible parking can be found in the shopping centre car park along with accessible toilet.

The Handlebar is an accessible family friendly licensed cafe offering coffee, beer, wine, food, snacks and drinks located at Stromlo Forest Park in Canberra.
