Indian Affair Restaurant

The National Zoo & Aquarium is privately owned and Australia's only combined Zoo and Aquarium.  Situated on around 25 hectares of land just five minutes from the centre of Canberra.

Most of the National Zoo is accessible by wheelchair. The site does include some steep inclines however if you follow the designated adventure trail these areas will be avoided.  There are several mobility scooters available for hire. Advanced bookings are encouraged as there are limited units available on any given day. To make a booking please call 02 6287 8400 or email frontdesk@nationalzoo.com.au. Identification is required as well as a hire form to be completed at the time of hire.

There is a wide variety of both native & exotic animals, as well as the largest inland saltwater tank in Australia. There are a number accessible picnic areas, complimentary BBQ facilities along with Jungle Vines Cafe, Rhino Bistro, Adentureland Playground, Gift Shop, & Animal Encounters where you get the opportunity to get up close & personal with some of the worlds most amazing creatures.

There are a number of disabled car parking spaces available for use. These are located at the main entrance and near the secondary keyhole entrance.  Parking is free for all zoo and Jamala visitors.

Accessible toilets can be found at the park along with baby change room.

A full viewing of the zoo is a decent walk….easy for some, not so easy for others…

If your mobility isn’t great or you have toddlers who would struggle with the distance, you can split up your visit. You can do one section one day and return any time in the next 2 weeks to see the other section. Parking is generally available near the start of both sections.

National Zoo & Aquarium

Calthorpes House is a window into an almost forgotten world. Built in 1927 for the Calthorpe family, this genuine survivor is a treasure house of domestic history.  With original furnishings, household appliances & photos reflecting the fashionable ideal of style & taste in the middle class Australian home of the late 1920s.

Calthorpes House is a semi accessible venue with steps at the front of the property but there is rear ramp access.  There is a gravel path driveway leading up to the property with a slight steep.  The house was designed for the hot, dry Canberra summers and to correspond with the Garden City ideal of a free-standing cottage set within a large garden. Like many Canberra houses of this period it has a roughcast exterior finish painted in earthy colours, a tiled roof with shingled gables, arched verandahs and shuttered windows.  The gardens are accessible & even comes with an air raid shelter.

Calthorpes' House offers a range of popular community programs & learning programs throughout the year. Admission includes a guided tour of Calthorpes' House. The house is open Saturdays only, please see website for details & to book.

Accessible toilets can be found just over 1km away at Manuka Terrace.  Regular parking can be found on the street, there is no accessible parking closeby.

Calthorpes House

The Museum of Australia Democracy at Old Parliament House is an accessible venue with step-free access to every level of the museum.

The entrance to the museum is at the front of the building, up the central staircase & through the glass doors where reception is.  Courtesy wheelchairs & strollers are available from reception. Mobility scooters may be used in all areas of the museum.  As a heritage building, Old Parliament House has some small rooms & narrow spaces.  Some areas of House of Representatives & Senate chambers are not accessible to wheelchair users.

There is lift access, via the doors on either side of the staircase. These doors have signs marked accessible entry.

Accessible toilets are located on the Lower floor & on the Main floor. Baby changing facilities are located on the Lower floor & the Main floor.

Free accessible parking and accessible pick-up & drop-off are located at the front of the museum. 

Naadam is an accessible Mongolian restaurant offering an authentic Mongolian dining experience of rich & unique food culture rooted in place & tradition.

The venue offers step free entry  to large glass doors via paved pathway approach.  Inside there are freestanding tables & chairs along with fixed banquette. 

There is an accessible enormous red yurt in Naadam’s courtyard, which stands alongside a vibrant mural of Mongolia. Called a ger, which translates to ‘home’, the yurt functions as both an homage to the owner Mugi’s home country & a space for private events.  The yurt is a traditional nomadic dwelling, a symbol of Mongolian culture & hospitality.  With seating up to 16 people the yurt provides an inimate setting adorned with authentic Mongolian patterns.

Naadam Restaurant

The Promenade Cafe is a seasonal Modern Australian dining & breakfast buffet in an elegant space with wood-accented decor situated in the Hyatt Hotel Canberra.

The hotel offers step free entry via paved level pathway approach to large open lobby.  There is open plan entry into the restaurant with frestanding tables, chairs, access to the found counters, bar & booth seating.

Accessible amenities are available in the hotel with lift access.

The Promenade Cafe

Farmers Daughter is an accessible cafe located in Yarralumla offering coffee, sweet & savoury treats in a relaxed environment.

The cafe features step free entry via paved pathway to glass doors into an accessible arcade.  There are free standing tables & chairs inside the arcade along with outside seating.

An accessible parking is directly opposite the cafe, accessible toilets can be found just over 1km away at Deakin shops on Duff Place. 

Farmers Daughter

Bookplate is an accessible cafe located in the National Library of Australia offering a warm & inviting indoor dining space as well as an outdoor terrace with magnificent panoramic views of Lake Burley Griffin.

There are freestanding tables & chairs both inside & outside.  The restaurant offers an array of breakfast options, a large range of housemade cakes & petit slices, coffee, fresh-pressed juices, healthy smoothies, classic & craft beers, local wines, lunch & brunch options.

Accessible toilets can be found onsite with further ones at the Treasury Building & Old Parliament House Rose Gardens.
