The Ian Potter Centre

The Ian Potter Centre is an accessible venue being the world's first major gallery dedicated exclusively to Australian art. Step-free front on Russell St side, lift access from Federation Square, ramp access from f Flinders St entrance to automatic door. Access is signposted. There are venue wheelchairs to use, one motorised that can be brought in with notice. No in-museum cafe but Atrium cafe is flat access & there is an accessible shop. Accessible toilets available, wheelchair access on every level. Accessible parking nearby, paid yes, however slight distance across from Russell St and in Federation square.The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is a fully accessible venue and the world's first major gallery dedicated exclusively to Australian art, set within Federation Square.

Getting in: Entrances are step-free at street level with automatic doors on the Russell Street side, via ramp from the Flinders Street entrance, and via lift from the Federation Square Plaza (arriving at the atrium entrance). Access routes are signposted throughout. Note there's no down escalator within the gallery, so plan to use the lift if you need step-free movement between floors in both directions.

Getting around: Lift access reaches every floor, and wheelchair access extends throughout the gallery spaces, including the auditorium, studios and education theatres.

Mobility aids: Free wheelchairs are available on-site, plus a motorised scooter that can be booked in advance — call ahead or book online before your visit to guarantee availability.

Other access aids: Large print guides, hearing loops, audio guides, tactile tours and Auslan-interpreted sessions are available on request. Self-regulation fidget devices, magnifying sheets and coloured overlays can also be borrowed free of charge. Assistance animals are welcome, and Companion Card/Carer Card holders are recognised.

Facilities: Wheelchair-accessible toilets are on the ground floor, with accessible toilets available on every level. There's no café inside the gallery itself, but the Atrium Café nearby has flat, step-free access, and there's an accessible gift shop. A Changing Places bathroom (full-sized change table, hoist and basin) is located about 500 metres away at Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne.

Parking: Accessible paid parking is available nearby at the Federation Square car park (Russell Street) and across at Federation Square itself, though it sits a short distance from the entrance.
