Melbourne Museum

We had a mixed experience when we visited the Melbourne Museum earlier this year.  I can only conditionally recommend it as an accessible venue, which is very disappointing.

There is very good disabled parking underneath the building, and the lift to travel to the museum is a reasonable size.

However, the lift within the museum is tiny and not appropriate for a large wheelchair - especially if a carer is needed to accompany the wheelchair user.

This means that a group cannot easily move through the museum together.

When we asked staff for another way to access the upper level, we were directed to a ramp that lead to a wet and cold outdoor garden.  We discovered an indoor ramp by ourselves later in our visit, so *thumbs down* for staff being helpful.

The disabled toilets that we found were ludicrously small.  I would not call them accessible.  There may have been other accessible toilets around but see the point about the unhelpful staff.  Additional accessible toilets can be found at Argyle Place

Finally, some spaces were set up so that it was very difficult to navigate the wheelchair - and we almost ran over a small child as a result!

It was a very disappointing outing.



Actual Melbourne Museum

DOC is a semi-accessible pizza restaurant with step at the front entrance, no side entrance or ramp.  However, there is outside seating & a wheelchair fits with assistance.
Accessible toilets can be found at Argyle Place, parking at 215 Elgin Street along with street parking.

Museo Italiano is an accessible permanent exhibition which draws on and displays the records, images and objects from CO.AS.IT.'s Italian Historical Society.

Very friendly from accessibility perspective. It has two separate accessible entrances. First is via the street and up the lift. The second is via their car park which has accessible car park. 
All of their cinemas have ramps for access. Cinema 3 has an accessibility lift (not a ramp). There is a limitation though on battery operated wheelchairs due to the weight of the wheelchairs as per the maximum weight capacity for the ramps. 
There are accessible toilets with ample space for wheelchairs and have automated doors. 
Accessible parking can be found at the underground car park at 215 Elgin Street.  

Cinema Nova

Karen's Diner is an accessible restaurant with step free entry door which can fit a wheelchair and there is easy access via the door. There seems to be ample space on the ground floor to fit a wheelchair. The toilets are upstairs but accessible toilets can be found at Argyle Place.  
There is a dedicated accessible parking spot right across the street opposite the diner. 
Further parking can be found at the underground car park on 215 Elgin Street.

A wheelchair can fit between tables. There is a mixture of low tables and benches with high stools both in the front bar and the beer garden. There is also seating out the front of the venue on both Brunswick St and Gertrude St.

Inclines: the park is on a slight incline heading north.

Midcity Centre is an accessible venue with step free access to the venue with no doors.
Inside the lifts are poorly signed and difficult to find.
There is no accessible toilet located, but one can be found closeby at 225 Bourke Street

Station access is via lift along with plaform.
Train access is via portable ramp and raised platform making getting onto train easier.

EMH Health Club is very difficult to locate, opposite the entrance to Woman’s Hospital carpark which is the only parking easily available.  Further parking can be found at the multi-storey, 33 Bedford Street.
There is works in the area as also the RMH Materials Handling Building, meaning a lot of traffic.
Disability access displayed on front entrance however location unclear. There is a lift but if was out of order so no accessible access to level 1 where entrance located. 
Accessible toilets can be found at Ievers Reserve & within the hospital




EFM Health Club

206 Bourke Street is an accessible venue with step free access & no doors.
Areas can be accessed step-free or via lifts.
Lifts are poorly signed and hard to find.
Poorly marked accessible toilet. Signage does not mention an accessible toilet but it is present.
Toilet is relatively easy to get to (on ground floor) but poorly signed so may be hard to locate.
There is no other accessibility equipment or changing tables. 
Procedures to use the toilet is via button operated door, clean and spacious inside.

One of the Melbourne branches is located on Swanson Street offering step free entry via paved level pathway approach to glass entry doors.  Inside is bright & colourful withnarrow corridor with tables & stool along one wall with further seating area accessed via steps.

Accessible toilets & parking can be found in the QV Centre.

Isabella’s is an accessible cafe located at the entrance of the Royal Womans Hospital serving breakfast and lunch.

The doorway into the bath room was maybe too narrow for the widest wheelchairs. Otherwise the bath room was well laid out. The big bonus about this did not apply to me but to my wife. In the hundreds of hotel rooms we have stayed in together, she has always had to put up with only a shower. For the first time ever, we had a bath room with both!

Grand Hyatt Melbourne

If you are looking for a taste of South -Central America look no further it's here in Richmond Melbourne. The front entry is level except for a small lip, there is ample space to manuever when you first enter and the first set of tables has ample room between them.for wheelchairs, whilst the tables further back are set up standard but the lovely staff are happy to move things around to accommodate you. The downside - theres isn't an accessible toilet. The food is amazing so I was willing to overlook that, especially since there are accessible public toilets near by.

El Toucan South Central

Sugar Glider is an accessible bar with step free entrance to manual push door, and no side entrance.
There are booth / bench seating, no outside seating or accessible toilet onsite.  
There is a public toilet at Victoria Street & accessible parking at Coles & Woolworths Fitzroy (customers only) & The Fitzroy Mills Market, along with street parking.
