Entrance

The main entrance is on Buitenkant Street, but wheelchair users should use the side entrance on Alberta Street, which has a ramp for step-free access.

Floors & Lifts

∙ Ground floor only — there is no lift to the second floor ∙ All ground floor surfaces are flat wooden floors, suitable for wheelchairs and mobility devices Toilets Accessible/disabled toilets are available at the back of the museum.

Inside the Museum

∙ Aisles are wide and the space is generally spacious ∙ The central permanent exhibition (map of District Six on the floor) is accessible for wheelchair users ∙ Temporary exhibitions may vary in accessibility ∙ The reception counter is quite high for wheelchair users, though staff are helpful and willing to accommodate

Areas for Improvement

∙ No lift to the second floor — upper floor inaccessible ∙ Exhibition panels and information boards are positioned quite high, which may be difficult for wheelchair users and people with limited vision ∙ Some text on boards has been noted as small and hard to read ∙ Pricing is the same for visitors with disabilities
